Caring for the caregiver, you need attention too and why it’s so important to take care of yourself while caring for others. Who is going to take care of you when you’re caring for others? Many times it hard to find the time to eat right and take care of yourself.

 

 

Being a caregiver, you take in so many different roles and is a full-time job, and most times if you are caring for an aging or injured parent you have a career or family of your own so it can be stressful and hard to take care of yourself.

I know it’s easier said than done finding the time, so you don’t lose you, your friends and the activities you miss in your life. Baby steps but your wellbeing and health are paramount as well as your family; they need you.

Be open to every experience.

You deserve this, it’s not indulgent to take time for you, we all need it, and self-care and caring for the caregiver is essential for your well being. Here are some tips to help you:

 

Caring for the caregiver tip 1

Learn some stress relieving relaxing techniques like meditation, yoga, music or anything that gets you in your happy place.  Find something that you enjoy doing so you will stick with it and remember how it made you feel.  Did it give you more energy, did it help you sleep better and not as stressed.  Every six weeks switch it up, so you don’t get bored of doing the same thing. Lately, I have been doing yoga and diffuse essential oils, and it has been a lifesaver with helping me relax after my busy 12 hour days.

Make sure you take care of your healthcare needs by making all your appointments and taking your medications. If you’re not feeling well call your doctor and take some time to get your energy back, it’s not going to do the person you watch any good if you’re not feeling well. If getting time off is not possible when they take a nap make sure you also do the same thing.  The last thing you want is to get the person you are caring for is to get sick, especially with flu season in full swing.

Get enough rest and nutrition.  Getting enough rest is very important to your wellbeing, it might be difficult if your family member or the person you care for is wandering at night. A good tip is to invest in a baby monitor or a video system since technology is always improving there are many apps on the market now to purchase. Why is nutrition so important? Eating a balanced diet is vital for good health and wellbeing. So try your best to live your most robust life.

 

Caring for the caregiver tip 4

Exercise regularly even if it only 10-15 at a time. For many there, the is not enough time in the day to workout for an hour every day. It hard driving to the gym at 5 am or go after work after working 10-15 hours, talk about exhausted, so try getting active 10 -15 minutes a couple of times a day.  Some days its a struggle to get some activity in my life, but the home workouts work for me when I cant make it to my yoga studio.

 

 

Caring for the caregiver tip 5

Take time off without feeling guilty. Its called caregiver guilt and happens when caring for someone at home. I used to get this all the time when my kids were younger it was just hard to enjoy myself going out so I would hurry home. You need this time to reboot, just enjoy it and don’t feel sorry for taking this time for you. Things aren’t going to fall apart if you take a little time for yourself.
